Pedal Power: Celebrating National Bike Month
Shared mobility for a safer, more connected ride.
May is here, and with it National Bike Month, the perfect opportunity to embrace two wheels over four. Bike Month isn’t just about cycling: it’s about sustainability, health, community and reimagining our daily commutes. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just dusting off your bike for a few social rides, there’s something for everyone this month. Our main local scene is San Luis Obispo, a Gold Level Bike Friendly City. Largely due to natural amenities, the nearby region is also recognized as being a premier destination for cyclists and bike tourism. SLO Regional Rideshare (part of our regional MPO, SLOCOG) coordinates numerous activities during Bike Month to recognize and promote biking as a safe and sustainable way to commute and recreate. We want to recognize their great work and note a few highlights about their month of activities.
Bike to Work Week: May 12–16, 2025
Mark your calendars for Rideshare’s Bike to Work Week. More than just a challenge to shift your work commute to biking, it’s a celebration of sustainable commuting. Log your rides, connect with fellow cyclists, and maybe even snag some rewards. Details and registration can be found at rideshare.org/program/bike-month.\
Community resources: keeping you rolling
Maintaining your bike doesn’t need to be a solo endeavor. Thankfully, San Luis Obispo boasts resources like the SLO Bike Kitchen in downtown San Luis Obispo, and in another DCR home location, Santa Cruz, you can check out the Bike Church. These co-ops offer tools, guidance, and a feeling of camaraderie. For added convenience in SLO, Rideshare has placed bike lockers (for which DCR has done the artwork) situated just outside the SLO Bike Kitchen.

Secure storage: bike lockers across the County
Worried about where to store your bike? Rideshare has started a pilot program of bike lockers that provide secure, weather-resistant storage options throughout SLO County. Whether you’re commuting or running errands, these lockers offer peace of mind. For a comprehensive guide on using them, check out a previous post here.
Navigating SLO County: updated bike infrastructure and maps
Understanding our region’s bike infrastructure is crucial for a smooth ride. We’ve recently updated the Rideshare regional bike maps which identify the various bike paths throughout SLO County. Keeping these bike maps up to date helps cyclists plan safer and more efficient routes.

Safety First: regional road safety in focus
For safer biking, safety across the entire road network (for all modes of transportation) is paramount. SLOCOG is finalizing its first ever Regional Road Safety Action PIan which has analyzed crashes in traffic and prioritized actions and projects for achieving zero deaths or serious injuries in traffic by 2050. Also known as the SLOCOG Road to Zero, the plan adopts the Safe System Approach to make safety improvements across all components of the transportation system, from better designed roads, to safer driver behavior. Bike Month is indeed part of this positive move towards a safer, sustainable transportation network with Rideshare disseminating essential bike safety information, from helmet use to visibility tips. The goal is to ensure every ride is a safe one.
Health and environmental benefits
Cycling isn’t just good for you, it’s good for the planet. Cycling boosts heart health, builds muscle, reduces stress and decreases your carbon footprint — all while getting you where you need to go. It’s good for your body, and it’s good for the planet. Swapping a few car trips for bike rides each week reduces emissions, cuts traffic, and supports cleaner air. Small change, big impact — for you and your community.
Ready to ride?
Bike Month is more than an event, it’s a movement. Whether you’re commuting, exploring, or simply enjoying the ride, now’s the time to embrace cycling. Let’s make every pedal count.
