Pedal Power: Celebrating National Bike Month

Pedal Power: Celebrating National Bike Month

May has arrived, and with it comes National Bike Month! The perfect time (and season) to swap four wheels for two. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist or dusting off a vintage frame for a social cruise, May is an annual celebration of the well-being, sustainability, and community that cycling brings.

For many, biking is more than just a mode of transportation – it’s a lifestyle choice that fosters wellness and environmental stewardship. As spring blooms, we are proud to support the initiatives making our home of San Luis Obispo (a Gold Level Bike Friendly City!) and our local region safer and more connected.

What’s Happening This Month

SLO Regional Rideshare (part of the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments) is leading the charge with a full calendar of activities on the Central Coast:

  • Bike to Work Week (May 11–15, 2026): Shift your commute and join a community-wide celebration of sustainable travel. Log your rides, connect with fellow commuters, and snag some rewards.
  • Local Resources: If you need a tune-up, visit the SLO Bike Kitchen in downtown SLO or the Bike Church if you’re in Santa Cruz. These co-ops provide the tools and guidance to keep you rolling!
  • Regional Events: For a full list of locations and times, have a look at the Rideshare Calendar.

DCR Design in Motion

We believe that good design makes infrastructure more accessible. DCR has experience helping our partners build more bikeable futures:

Projects:DCR work and contributions:
Pilot Bike LockersWe designed the vinyl graphics for the secure BikeLink lockers at Cal Poly SLO and Downtown SLO (Morro St.).
Regional Bike MapsWe created and maintain the SLO Rideshare regional bike maps, assisting cyclists to plan their bike journeys in SLO County.
LA Metro Web MapsWe developed a print and web bike map for LA Metro to help riders navigate the complexities of LA urban bike infrastructure.
Various projects that DCR worked on involving biking and active transportation: bike locker vinyl stickers, print bike maps, online bike maps.

Pro Tip: Worried about security? Bike lockers provide weather-resistant, secure storage. Look for SLOCOG’s BikeLink Bike Lockers with DCR graphics right outside the SLO Bike Kitchen!

Why We Ride

The benefits of cycling ripple outward from the individual to the entire planet:

  • For you: Boosts heart health, builds strength, and reduces daily stress.
  • For the planet: Swapping even a few car trips for bike rides reduces your carbon footprint, cuts congestion, and supports cleaner air for everyone.

Ready to Roll?

Bike Month is a movement! While we celebrate throughout May, we encourage you to turn these rides into year-round habits. Let’s make every pedal count! What’s your favorite route?
